What makes it chic ?

What do we notice when someone looks chic? – Well, at first, nothing special.

However you are very likely to remember that elusive luster which affected you straight away at least for a while. Chic is something intangible like pheromones that a person can feel but is unlikely to describe it precisely.

Chic can be regarded as Parisian, minimal Scandinavian, cool British, vintage-inspired and so on. One can recognise it in modern, trendy looks, and another in clever mix of clothing from different price levels. Eventually it is something that lies beneath but still finds its outer expression through it.

Someone could definitely  look chic wearing a Rick Owens jacket, pair of JBrands and Jimmy Choo heels, another person wearing one of those romantic Chloe dresses, Isabel Marant boots and finishing this look with Alexander McQueen jacket or taking just a simple pair of Levi’s jeans, oversized cashmere jumper and Lavin flats.

Chic is something intangible like pheromones that a person can feel but is unlikely to describe it precisely.

Surely, perception of chic originates from you own taste, mix and match clothing skills, style vision etc. For instance, I’m personally in love with Diane Kruger’s outfit from Chanel Couture that she wore at Met Ball this year. When it comes to casual looks I have always admired Laura Bailey’s ability of self-expression through her style. Either way, we all know that it is not only about choosing the right clothing, but how a person wears it. It is neither about this “classic chic” nor about some secret list of essentials, unfortunately, such list simply does not exist. Well, perhaps, it does exist, but surely it will be unique for each of us.

First of all, chic is about you, your history and everything that makes you who you are. Have you ever asked yourself how would you like to be perceived by others and why? Answer sincerely and see if it corresponds to the “real” you. If you answer positively then you are lucky and whatever style tribe you are in – you will always make it chic. It is not an easy job and in most cases it comes with experience. Your own “history” is what gives you this individuality and uniqueness, that grants you this chic vision and a possibility of being authentic, which is another crucial component of being chic. Take Audrey, Brigitte, Jane Birkin, have they ever looked unnatural or awkward in their outfit? At first we see a person when looking at them and then their outfit. This kind of image is what can be called a harmonically perceived picture. Every single detail has to play its own part but never the leading one, nor the secondary one, leave it for yourself – the leading part – of creating that simple yet sophisticated picture of yours. Thus the main trick of being chic is to get your individual natural look without trying too hard.

Another important component of chic is, of course, the clothing itself. Not surprisingly the word chic is always associated with being “expensive”. Chic is certainly expensive when it comes to statement pieces. However for everyday purposes, creating chic outfit becomes easier with the whole range of flourishing greenery of high-street brands that are there to help you. Thus it is very important not to forget “pushing”  your “chic button” – which is the ability to distinguish high quality pieces – when trying to chose something from the overwhelming number of selection. For instance, have you ever noticed the difference between two almost identical pieces of clothing? The one that makes you look and feel gorgeous, and the other one that serves you just as an ordinary garment. As usual, the devil is in the details: fabric, colours that suit you, stitching, seams, and cut itself. These kinds of details make a huge difference. You have to be mindful even when picking some item from a luxury segment. Thus there is one Karl Lagerfeld’s statement that comes to my mind: “Never use the word ‘cheap’. Today everybody can look chic in inexpensive clothes (rich people buy them too). There is good clothing on every level today. You can be chicest thing in the world in a T-shirt and jeans – its up to you”.

But there is still that one important thing about chic, which wayfaring from one fashion era to another – chic is in modesty, it must never be too much even if ‘this’ is something good.
